I subscribe to some fantastic blogs and RSS feeds to do with education, music technology and more. I have created a page of such feeds under the “Music Ed” drop down menu at the top of my site. Please visit them and see what they have to offer you. I will be updating them as I come across more.

I particularly wanted to draw attention to the latest “iPad in the Music classroom” post over at James Frankel’s Musiced.net site. A lack of Imagination or Motivation can be the arch nemesis of any teacher. But his imagaintive future using the iPad in the classroom has amazing potential. With minds tuned in to the lastest innovations and how they could be used for education, everyone should have rss feeds across their browsers. What do you think?

By becoming a part of a global community educators can enrich their own personal development, gain insights into other teaching methods as well as learn some exciting skills. Visit Kim Cofino’s Blog Always Learning to see some presentations on the benefits of becoming part of the global teaching profession.

One of the reasons for creating this site was to connect with a larger pool of teachers and to gain insights I would not have had being isolated in a small part of Australia. My wife Laura has been creating blogs for some time now and her site is dedicated to using her knowledge to help others or enrich her own teaching, Teaching and Learning.

Don’t stop at RSS Feeds though. Have a go at Diigo (online bookmarking), ISSUU (digital publishing) and website/presentation sites like WIX.COM and Voice thread. Everything helps to increase the power of what we teach, how we teach it and the results it can inspire in our students – or even our own children

Finally, I had the privilege of working with an IT innovator for education, Tom March, for four years at one of my previous schools. His blog and ideas are great spring boards for the classroom and a teachers own skill development. Have a look!

Other feeds to try out – click on the RSS icon on the right hand side of the websites’ address in your browser. You can then choose to have the feed on your browser or in a program like Mac Mail or Entourage. It will update the articles each time you open your chosen RSS reader.

I recently attended a certification course for Orff music pedagogy – however because this post has been a long time in completing the ‘recently’ part is not entirely true. But I am now back for 2010 with new ideas and fresh examples to show how I teach classroom music!

In 2009 Term 4, I asked my year 10 elective class to create a series of vocal rhythms with accompanying ostinaots based upon the rhymes of Dr Seuss’ books. Not only did they take to the task with enthusiasm but they wanted to teach them to my year 7 and 8 classes personally.

This is what I love about the Orff approach – everyone can be involved, music making is enjoyable and ultimately it brings out high levels of creativity from those involved.

Let me know what you think of their work and remember you need to have installed Sibelius Scorch to view the scores!

In May 2006 Create Digital Music Site wrote a post on the free online orchestration source Principles of Orchestration. This was originally a work written by the Romantic composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (known for Flight of the Bumblebee or Scheherazade) and published posthumously in 1922. It has now been turned into a flash, interactive course with audio samples derived from the Garritan Personal Orchestra suite. The score examples, combined with the audio samples really bring his orchestration approach ‘to life.’

Visit: Online Orchestration or Jazz Arranging Online

Imagine the possibilities for Music extension or composition classes. Not to mention simple year 7 programs on instruments of the orchestra or creating excellent music examinations with the examples provided!

“Whether you’re composing for real orchestrations, scoring films or games, teaching, or just learning more about how the orchestra works, there’s never a time when you stop learning about orchestration. That’s why a new free, online version of a classic Russian orchestration guide, complete with new interactive examples, is good news.” - Create Digital Music

From time to time textbooks or band arrangements do not have enough.
From time to time music is ‘out of date’ with current students and repertoire needs a re-shuffle.
From time to time I get really good musicians in my classes and it is wonderful to see them perform as a group.
This is where Sibelius notational software and arranging skills come into play for me as a music educator.

I have created a vast array of musical material for ensembles, first time music students in year 7, elective classes made up of classical instrument players and even heavy rock players. I take themes from Australian works, film composers and obviously the classical masters, to help my students:

1. Hear, sing and recognise these themes
2. Analyse them for composition, aural or theory activities
3. Perform them as solos or in a group on their chosen instrument

This has become a very effective technique for me in remaining ‘up to date’ with my student’s musical tastes. It keeps them focussed and wanting to know what our next lesson will involve. My lessons therefore become interactive in every aspect and involve the whole body in learning about music and how to make music.

I did a review on the older version of auralia in this post when I looked at Sibelius 6. I own both the Sibelius notation and Sibelius Instruments suites and these have been invaluable for my teaching in the classroom, research at home and general composition/arranging. The Sibelius Instruments Suite (pictured with annotations below) is an excellent resource for teachers and students. It has interactive audio and how to notate with mutes on brass instruments or con sordino on violins.

With this latest addition of Auralia and Musition rolled into one suite Avid Technology will be (in my opinion) one of the best companies to buy music educational software from. Sibelius as a company have been more than helpful for me personally and with the schools I have worked at. You can see more on their website here.

The ease to which students can adapt and then learn from these training programs shows me just how tech savvy the creators of Sibelius are! What better way to engage students then by showing them something new and exciting on the computer that they can use and gauge their improvement by!

Here are some other excellent Aural Training tools:

Aquallegro – I recommend this app to every music teacher I come across with aMac It is free, tests everything from chords to intervals to note names and scales and cooperates with most midi keyboards. A great classroom tool.

Earmaster – this is an outstanding program that filled in the gaps Auralia 3 left behind. It is aimed at all levels of musicians and a demo is available from their site. It also has the ability to measure your ability to sing intervals correctly or clap back rhythms. Earmaster also comes with jazz tutorials and other customisable features.

G Major Music Theory – This is an online resource. This site deals with theoretical training but also CONTEXTUAL Listening. They have real audio examples in mp3 format of cadence types, intervals used in famous pieces and so on. I use it for test creation and helping my students understand the composition techniques prevalent in a music era/genre.

iFlipr – Is a virtual flash card source with every topic under the sun (not just music). This link will take you to a series of cadence flash cards with real audio examples.

This is an aural booklet I created for my Stage 5 & 6 students. It is a combination of any musical concepts sheets I could get my hands on. I condensed the material and made a concise version for my students, with pictures of course.

I have begun to use ISSUU as a means of uploading student notes and samples for them to download or read in preparation for examinations. It is amazing how my students always manage to lose important handouts. With the help of ISSUU they can read them online, download and print them or even show their parents what they are up to in class.

Here is a topic test I made for a unit entitled ‘History of the Guitar.’

On the teacher side, I can read other professional publications from Orff Associations around the world, learn some techniques in the Guitar Group, or collect a series of music childrens books to show my classes.

ISSUU is also fully customisable and you can include audio with each publication. This is a feature I will be looking at soon for delivering virtual lessons or interactive worksheets to my classes.

ISSUU.com is a fantastic and innovative resource for the ICT savy teacher, give it a try!

Visit my ISSUU Homepage by clicking here, or, click on one of the above publications to view them.

2. Describe the SOUND of each theme in words, using the Concepts of Music
3. Once the descriptions have been finalised they move onto experimenting with sounds and melodies
4. Students notate draft copies of their themes onto manuscript
5. Students present the Fairytale via narration and play each theme as the character/idea appears in the story.

What I am very excited about is the work of one of my students, who, using Finale Notepad, created some outstanding themes with the help of his group. I have ‘cleaned up’ his MIDI files and presented them below in SIBELIUS format.

I am a very big fan of the Muppets and in particular ‘Muppet Treasure Island.’ Hans Zimmer did a great job in writing the score for this film and I am sure it inspired his future masterpieces in ‘Pirates of The Caribbean.’ Watch the video embedded here and note its clever use of the dorian mode and layering of musical textures on top of one-another.
I was asked to write a vocal round for my Orff Course in October this year. I instantly remembered how clever this was and thought my year 7 and 8 boys would like this song. Thanks to Ong Jiin Joo I now have a plug-in that enables me to embed Sibelius 6 scores as scorch files for all to see and download.
