Whether you teach in the classroom as an instrumental tutor or a parent at home, music applications have taken over. Teachers have iPad professional development, schools are implementing 1:1 programs across the world and kids seem to be living in a very exciting (though technology driven) time.
The question is, does having any particular app ensure authentic learning?
The answer should immediately be no!
Whatever you find, you need to take the time to develop extensive lessons about a topic, or subject or piece of music that incorporates the technology.
As an music educator I am questioned a lot about ‘what apps?’ I use in the classroom. There are a lot of applications out there but the thing to remember is that the pedagogy, or focus of your lesson, should come first. Then find the app or the activity (such as singing, moving or playing) that will reinforce that concept. You will end up with a longer lasting impact in the learning of your students. Better yet, connections will be formed between the focus of your lesson and how your use of technology reinforced it.
Junior Music iPad Applications
Here is a publication of my Junior iPad Music Apps that you can research and possibly use in your classroom.
I also have a category on my iPad called Orchestra where I have collected and trialled various ‘Instruments of the Orchestra’ iPad applications. These are great tools for reinforcing listening lessons and the activities inside such as AVCO’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra has variation, score and even fugal activities with graphic notation! Great for junior or senior music students.
