A frequently occurring symbolic word in Balkan Women’s Folksong, Kitka means “bouquet” in Bulgarian and Macedonian. This is a wonderful vocal group so don’t miss listening to them!
Kitka is an American women’s vocal arts ensemble inspired by traditional songs and vocal techniques from Eastern Europe. Kitka strives to expand the boundaries of folk song as a living and evolving expressive art form. Founded in 1979, Kitka began as a grassroots group of amateur singers from diverse backgrounds who met regularly to share their passion for the stunning dissonances, asymmetric rhythms, intricate ornamentation, lush harmonies, and resonant strength of Eastern European women’s vocal music.
Kitka hold many concerts and vocal workshops; regional, national, and international tours; programs in schools; recording, publication, and broadcast projects as well as adventuresome collaborations.
Essentially, they are a beautiful ensemble who sing and convey a love of folk song. I find their music enchanting as do my students. You can buy many of their Albums (which are also featured on Last.FM) and Song-books with complete notation. This has meant that I can use them for my world music topic in the classroom. It was really interesting to hear year 8 & 9 singing in close harmony – fantastic!
Kitka also have a series of free download-able songs each month. Check them out at their website section Kitka on YouTube.
