With the new feature of synchronizing YouTube videos to Noteflight scores I had to write up some examples and see just how well this could work for educators and their students. I will also be mentioning various transcribing software to help create your own imaginative video-scores in the classroom.

What is Noteflight?

Noteflight is an amazing online notation program that boasts more than just the ability to type in crotchets. Noteflight has the ability to create complete scores that playback, synchronize to YouTube videos, communicate with MIDI devices and that is not even mentioning its collaboration with the Vermont MIDI Project and Music Education Activity Templates.

Previous Noteflight Posts

I wrote about my use of Noteflight for Orff style vocal rhythms here, showing Howard Goodall documentaries with scores here, and using Noteflight for choral part practice at home here. Its uses are only limited by your imagination and willingness to experiment (as well as which tier of the program you invest in). So lets get started with Noteflight’s free version and a score I recently made to show how easily YouTube will sync with notation.

With the above example I followed these simple steps:

1. Decided on a YouTube Video to transcribe
2. Used the following applications to help me transcribe it (you could do the same)
GarageBand
Melodyne
Capo
Band in a Box Audio Wizard

3. Logged in to my free Noteflight account & created a new ‘shared’ score

4. Entered my notes & added the video via Noteflight’s ‘Play’ Menu
5. Synchronized playback in real-time, saved & copied the HTML to my blog

It is that easy. I will also be making a PDF ‘How To’ in the future – let me know what you would like to see

  1. Thanks for this posting and tweeting this. Besides being really informative about your approach to the Noteflight/Youtube syncing that’s a wonderful song/video to showcase it with. This was a truly inspiring piece and my students will be getting to know it as soon as school reopens in August.
